The
client wanted an animation that could be displayed online
and at trade shows to demonstrate their prefilled protein crystallization
microplate product line. The animation needed not only to show the
mechanics of tray setup, but also convey the ease of use of the
product. This project presented several unique challenges over the
course of production.
One
of the first challenges we were presented with was to produce
a photorealistic computer generated replica of the actual product
(the microplate). This was accomplished by producing a three dimensional
reconstruction of the microplate and applying advanced raytraced
materials during the rendering process.
Another
interesting, albeit subtle, issue was that protein solutions
are typically clear. This made it very difficult to observe the
dispensing of the actually solutions; hence, the vibrant blue color
of the protein sample. Because of the way the animation
was produced, the color of the protein solution, and indeed
most objects in the animation, can be changed with minimal effort,
at any time, depending on the clients needs. Producing content
in this manner provides the client with flexibility to
make changes later as their needs change and saves them
time and money.
In addition
to the above challenges, the client also requested the
animation be completed prior to the print publication date for the
accompanying advertisement. The total time of completion
for the project, from modeling to post-production, was slightly
over one week.
